JAMES B. FARNSWORTH LOCAL SCHOOL COUNCIL 

NOTICE WAS GIVEN that the Local School Council held a re-scheduled meeting on Wednesday,
January 15, 2014 at 8:15 a.m. at Farnsworth School, 5414 North Linder Avenue, in Chicago, Illinois.

6. Reports
A. Chairperson
-Happy New Year! A big thanks to Principal OKen and building staff for getting the school grounds ready after the massive snow falls and negative temperatures
-LSC Elections are upon us-applications due February 26th (at school)

B. Principal Report
-NWEA testing is wrapping up
-Quarterly (Q2) Benchmark assessments are being completed this week and next. The CPS created assessment is modeled are the upcoming PARCC assessment.
-ILT learning cycle continues to be “Text Complexity”
-ACCESS testing is also starting
-REACH observations continue, as do peer observations
-College Day has officially begun, and staff will work on promoting the day to increase participation
-Attendance is a continuing concern-and Principal Oken is working with the Board to adjust the metric specific to our cluster programs.
-A letter was sent out concerning parents ability to “opt” out of the NWEA testing-it will be included in tomorrow’s distribution of the Monthly Mustang.
-Next Family Night will potentially include a program by the Respiratory Health Association-concerning
-Principal OKen continues her professional development via the CELA program. Additionally, Principal OKen is working with her 2nd year Principal Mentor group to tour various neighborhood schools.
-Ron Sanders has been chosen as Farnsworth’s building engineer. (Hooray!)
-As Mrs. Shelke has resigned her position with the board, the opening is in the process of being posted and interviews for the full-time bilingual position will begin shortly.
-We are OFFCIALLY Healthy Wellness Certified!!!
-Fund summaries were distributed-no major changes. Discussion of re-instatement of the “Raz Kids” program will be revisited for its effectiveness.
-Donations to two accounts have been noted. 1) In memory of Erin McDermott to benefit the vision department 2) In memory of Tiffani for anything that would “make her smile”

C. PTA
-Health & Wellness presentation at yesterday’s PTA meeting was very informative.
-Daddy-Daughter dance February 7th (6-8pm)
-Upcoming membership drive
-Proposed parent “traffic” control committee was also discussed. Mrs. Oken has spoken to the alderman and is aware of the concern.
-Suggestion of a dress code “free pass” for a student’s birthday.

D. FSCPF
-Chess is going well-looking to continue support from Dan Wilson
-Stage lights are in-they look great!
-Still involved in the participatory budget process, Mrs. Oken has been added as a contact and is aware of the project and its cost projections
-Concern over missing TIF funds is being looked into

E. Committees: 
BAC-Next meeting scheduled for April, ACCESS testing is progress
PPLC- No report at this time
CIWP-LRE-Report distributed


7. New Business
-Game Night potentially scheduled for the next few weeks in January.


8. Old Business
A. After Care Program Update
-Although minimum number of enrollment has not been met,
“Champions” is still considering starting the program regardless.
