JAMES B. FARNSWORTH LOCAL SCHOOL COUNCIL 

NOTICE WAS GIVEN that the Local School Council held a meeting on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 beginning at 8:15 a.m. at Farnsworth School, 5414 North Linder Avenue, in Chicago, Illinois.

-Allison, a parent at Farnsworth would like to see dress code eradicated.



VI. Reports

A. Chairperson

-Congratulations to the 7th-8th Battle of the Books team who won first place at the city competition earlier this month.

-Thank you to Christina Hatley and Kate W. for securing $100, 000 for the Farnsworth Campus Park.

-Chairperson shared two letters she wrote on behalf the LSC to Representative Martwick and Alderman John Arena.



B. Student Council Report
-Report presented by Maddie B. and Bea B.

-Student Council visited the Chicago City Council last week and really enjoyed their time. They met John Arena (thanked him for his help with PB 45 funds) and sat in the mayor’s chair. They are looking into making this an annual trip for the council.

-The SC has extra funds that they are deciding how to spend-all of which will benefit the Farnsworth campus

-SC has also been working on the School Yearbook, and have decided that they will be taking over this project every year.



C. Principal Report
- Congratulations to the 7th/8th grade Battle of the Books team!!

-Yesterday’s Staff PD focused greatly on the use and technology in the building as well as a needs assessment.

-The ILT has decided to fundraise for such technology initiatives.

-Title 1 teacher has been hired, Mrs. Stasiowski. She services 65 students.

-CIWP will be reviewed by administration and ILT at the end of the year-including the school mission and vision

-REACH tasks will be given out in May, as well as the NWEA assessment. PARCC assessments have been completed.

-Update on School-wide Drills

-Most recent fire drill ran very efficiently.

-Upcoming: Bus evacuation drill, allergen drill

-Parent Involvement & Daily Operations

-Family Fine Arts night is May 21st

-School Management and Daily Operations

-School grounds/Safety and Security Updates:

-Signs have been posted regarding dog waste on the campus park.

-Storage unit has been moved to prevent trespassers and increase graffiti activity

-Still awaiting and acceptable bid for the “Stairs” project.

-Fiscal Management

-No date yet set for the FY16 Budget

-Communication

-A blurb has been sent to the Nadig regarding the Battle of the Books team win.



Budget Requests

-A motion was made by Kathy O’Donnell to move $192.19 from Miscellaneous to Benefits Pointer to clear the negative balance AND a motion was made to reduce the Sub-Bucket by $21, 000 and allocate

$6,490 of those funds to Easy Tech and Mathletics . The motions were seconded by Jim Oehler

The motions passed with no discussion or abstentions.

-A motion was made by Christina Hatley to approve the use of $28,897.51 from Title 1 funds to purchase a Laptop cart. The motion was seconded by Kathy O’Donnell and passed with no discussion or abstentions.



D. PTA
-Lego Night was fantastic, as was the Upper Grade Red Carpet Dance.

-Teacher Appreciation WEEK was amazing.



E. Farnsworth School Campus and Park Foundation

-No report at this time-the foundation is undergoing a “Make-Over”.


F. Committees
-BAC-No report at this time

-PPLC-No report at this time

-CIWP-LRE-Report was reviewed, as presented

-PAC

**Chairperson has requested minutes from meetings**



VII. New Business

-Dress Code

-Recommendations to include blue jeans, any color solid collared shirt, and solid colored sweaters/hoodies, solid colored bottoms(pants).

-Opinions were shared about keeping dress code the same-with no modifications.

Diane Baran departed at 9:28am

-Farns”wear” and Spiritwear still only allowed on gym/health, or special days.

-Additional, opinions included removing the dress code altogether.

-Shoes policy remains the same, no-flip flops.

-Conversation concluded that the LSC will revisit the issue at the June meeting, before which each representative has an opportunity to speak with the members they represent.



VIII. Old Business
-PB 45 update. While we secured $100k from the Alderman’s office-we were not recommended by the Water Reclamation District. Christina H. has plans to seek out the location of TIF funds that were previously allocated to Farnsworth
